It's Shopify's developer framework for building storefronts outside of Shopify's standard Liquid themes. It offers enhanced flexibility and performance, which makes it ideal for dynamic content and interactive shopping experiences. It boosts developer productivity by giving them access to cutting-edge code libraries that speed up development projects.
Pack storefronts include a CMS—so in some ways it can be compared apples to apples to other CMSs.

The biggest difference: Most other CMSs are great at distributing content to multiple channels—ex. an in-store kiosk, a mobile app, AND your website. They're built to take flexibility to the extreme so you can use them with any framework, any integrations, and any channel. But for most brands who are just looking to update their website, it's total overkill.

Pack focuses on Shopify Hydrogen stores—so it's already set up specifically for the ecommerce use case, uses all the toolsets that Shopify provides, and is designed to make website content updates easy and quick—regardless of your technical expertise. Because it mirror's a Shopify theme editing experience, most users feel right at home in the Pack Customizer.
If you're just starting out, we generally recommend sticking to a theme.

If you've found product-market fit, you're scaling your product catalog, using a ton of apps, want to improve your site performance, it's definitely time to consider it.

If you're considering a custom theme / redoing your site, it's the ideal time to make the switch—because it takes about the same amount of time and effort.
If you're coming from a Shopify theme, most brands find that 2-3 months is a realistic timeline, even with only a single developer.

If you're coming from a React-based stack already, it can go even faster, 1-2 months.
Headless storefronts require you to stitch together a hosting service, a CMS, a data orchestrator (optional), and build all of your own integrations. You have to own and maintain all of that tech.

Shopify Hydrogen relieves that burden by owning and maintaining the site architecture. Pack makes Hydrogen storefronts as easy as a theme—unlike most CMSs.
